Ellijay, GA (25 miles from The Preserve)
The seat of Gilmer County since 1834, Ellijay is a wonderful, quaint town filled with antique and specialty shops, galleries, and restaurants. Old buildings and distinctive architecture, such as the old courthouse, beautifully accent the old town square, which is still in use. Here, the Ellijay and Cartecay Rivers join to form the Coosawattee River, which flows down to nearby Carter's Lake. North Georgia Mountain Real Estate & Georgia Mountain Land for SaleThe derivation of the city's name is believed to derive from the Cherokee, meaning "place of green earth" or "new ground place." The city is one of the rare places that retains the same name and is located on the exact site of an original Indian settlement. With logging and prospecting for gold in the late 1800s, Ellijay became the catalyst for railroad expansion into the southern Blue Ridge Mountains.

Ellijay is known as "Georgia's Apple Capital" with numerous orchards and roadside stands. In October, the town is home to the Georgia Apple Festival, a popular celebration of the fruit that saved Gilmer County from the agricultural and economic devastation of the boll weevil in the 1920s.

Blue Ridge (35 miles from The Preserve)
Blue Ridge was founded in 1887 after the Marietta and Northern Railroad came to Fannin County. It became the Fannin county seat in 1895. Nestled in the mountains and the Chattahoochee National Forest, the town was once considered a health resort because of its pure mineral waters. Visitors would ride the train into town, dine at the Blue Ridge Hotel, and take a leisurely walk to the mineral springs after dinner.
Today, Blue Ridge still exudes small town charm. Walk along Main Street, with its antique and specialty shops, galleries and restaurants. In addition to being a great gathering and picnic spot, Blue Ridge City Park offers weekend carriage rides, and is home to a small but locally famous family of roosters, hens and chicks. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is a must-see attraction. The railroad depot remains a central focus downtown. The ride journeys along the Toccoa River to McCaysville, against a backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
